Campinas
Campinas is a municipality in the interior of the state of São Paulo, in
the Southeast Region of Brazil. In 2024, it had an estimated population of
1,185,977 people, making it the third most populous municipality in São Paulo
and the fourteenth in the country. It is the first Brazilian city to become a
metropolis without being a state capital, exerting significant national
influence. In 2011, it accounted for at least 15% of all national scientific
production, ranking as Brazil’s third-largest research and development hub.
The city offers good quality of life, as shown by its low unemployment and crime rates, and its Human Development Index (HDI). Campinas also stands out for its modern industrial and technological park, as well as renowned higher education institutions such as the State University of Campinas - UNICAMP - and the Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas - PUCCAMP. Campinas is also home to the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory - LNLS and the Center for Research and Development in Telecommunications – CPqD.
Tourist attractions and interesting places to visit in Campinas:
- Parque Portugal, Portugal Park, also known as Lagoa do Taquaral.
- Bosque dos Jequitibás, Wood of Jequetibás , which has a small zoo and the Natural History Museum.
- Mirante da Torre do Castelo, Observatory of the Castle’s Tower.
- Estação ferroviária Anhumas, Anhumas railway station.
- Museu da Imagem e do Som, Museum of Image and Sound.
- Museu de Arte Contemporânea, Museum of Contemporary Art.
- Centro de Convivência, a community center with a weekend crafts and food fair.
UNICAMP, which will host MiniDebConf Campinas 2026, is located at Barão Geraldo’s district, approximately 12km from downtown Campinas.

UNICAMP
The State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) is a public university in Brazil. It is considered one of the best universities in the country and in Latin America. It was designed from the beginning as an integrated system of research centers, unlike other Brazilian universities created by consolidating pre-existing schools and institutes. Today, the university offers 66 undergraduate courses and 153 graduate programs, totaling 34,000 students.
The Institute of Computing - IC was established 56 years ago and offers undergraduate courses in Computer Engineering and Computer Science, as well as master’s and doctoral programs, specialization, and extension courses.
